Dorothy Distelhurst

Dorothy Ann Distelhurst was born on January 13, 1928, to Ruby and Alfred Distelhurst. Alfred was working as a printing estimator and salesman for the Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, and Ruby was a homemaker.

On September 19, 1934, 6-year-old Dorothy was attending a private kindergarten at 113 Scott Avenue, which was just an 18-minute walk down the road from her home at 2021 Scott Avenue.

Around 1 pm, kindergarten class concluded for the day, and Dorothy started to make her way back home. Now, while nowadays one wouldn’t be comfortable with letting a small child walk home by herself, this was the 1930s, and it was not unusual for small children to walk short distances alone.

Around 1:15 pm, a neighbor living at 303 Scott Avenue, saw Dorothy walking down the road in her blue and white…
